Painting the RSV Nuyina involved quite a few steps. The ship is Australia’s Antarctic research and supply vessel, often seen docked in Hobart before heading south. I worked through a process inspired by the French Academic method, starting with several preparatory drawings and colour studies, then combining them to build the first two underpaintings in the studio. I completed the final layers back at the scene, aiming to capture the clear, mid-morning light and the quiet atmosphere around the harbour.
